Fair Car Leasing- The Downside
March 27, 2021

Its easy to lease a car through Fair. They make it simple, download the app. Choose your car, pay the downpayment, pick it up. I paid about $1200 to get in the car, $250 per month plus another $150 for insurance.
Here are a few a things that you need to know: They have a mileange limit of 10,000 per year with the option of buying extra miles at lease time for 10 cents a mile. DO IT. If you have a life, and a job and you like to get out of town everyonce in a while. You will go over the 10,00 mile limit. I used my car for work and a few out of town trips and after I turned my car in after 1/1/2 years I owed over $1600. They recently did an ad campaign which was meant to appeal to the adventurous- get out of town for the weekend type people. It did seem a little funny that they think that they would run that campaign with a 10,000 mile limit.

I liked my car and I kept it up with regular maintenace and oil changes. Fair will pay for two a year. The issue I had with the car were: the ery cheap light colored material on the seats and the cheap felt like carpet. I think that Fair gets cars from dealers that want to get rid of the cars they can't sell. Like the ones with cheap feeling seats and felt floors. But other than that, it wan't a bad car.

The problems started when I wanted to give the car back. I finally had saved enough to buy an almost new car for myself but I had heard that Fair might be going into the car sales business and I figured if I could get the car at a descent price I would buy it. But no- they wouldn't sell it to me.
What they DO do is take the car to be auctioned off - straight from the driveway to the auction block, which I don't understand, because surely they could have gotten market price from me. It didn't stop there, even thought the car was being auctioned, they still dinged me for a few things that I believe happened after the tow truck came to take the car to auction.
The first one was the windshield ding that was not there when the car was hauled away, the second, a small ding to the front bumper that also wasn't there when the car left, and third, they wanted to charge me for one single tire that they said had "excessive wear and tear." How does that happen and is that my fault?
During the return process, they will send you an email that tells there is no need to detail your car. So I didn't, I just cleaned it above and beyond what I usually do. Turns out they want to charge me to get the seats cleaned now.
I emailed and called to dispute these issues but I had no luck getting them to discount the charges.
So how do I feel about my overall experience? I would not lease a car from Fair again and I can't say that I would recommend it. At least with a traditional lease, you get the option of buying the car (even at an inflated price) and you aren't left completely empty handed your intial investment to get in the car and the monthly payments.
Who is Fair right for? Perhaps someone who has money to burn, money to switch cars every few months before any wear and tear happens, money to pay for the extra mileage if you really do want to use the car for a few vacations. I'm sure that there are plenty of people out there who can do that. FYI- If you are a practical minded, there are plenty of dealers out there that will let you get into a good car with around a $2-$3,000 downpayment.
